Ah. Right. Well. This took an incredibly long period of time - like, about a week on and off. The original canvas size in Painter was 5000 by 7000 ish, and because it was for a poster I needed a lot of detail. Plus, I'm really not very good at painting cities (gah straight lines!) and that took a while.
Pretty pleased with the water and the cliffs, particularly that little beach down there... but apart from that I'm not sure if I like the overall image that much. I think I've been looking at it for far too long! Need to ignore it for a week and come back, and see how it actually looks.
Anyway, so that's over! I think I'll do a bunch of small things for a while.
[EDIT] This is actually a promotional piece for the online creative-writing-based rpg Tazlure - www.tazlure.nl - it was intended to be a poster-sized promo thingy for rpg conventions and fayres (first official public showing - Gothic and Fantasy Fair in Holland on March 1st), mainly in Holland although players are being encouraged to post them around their home towns. I know there's at least one poster going up somewhere in Serbia, and several in rpg shops in Holland, and who knows where else. We also have lots of players in England and America, as well as several European countries and Australia, not counting the one or two we have in the Phillipines, Russia, and other places. So if you see one, then it's probably one of my friends who put it up. Please take a photo and show me!
I've been told AO versions have been printed out on glossy paper, which is rather exciting, as well as littler flyers, and I'm being sent a flyer in the post this weekend. I should also get to see a photo of the poster-sized version with my Dutch friends, so I'm sure I'll share that with you at some point!
Incidentally, for anyone who knows Tazlure or visits, the city pictured is Roque D'Ancourt. [/EDIT]
I love it! It has a very lovely color scheme, kinda soft and peaceful, like the town is just waking up in the early morning hours. You did an awesome job on the details too, i can only imagine how long it must have taken you. its an instant favorite for sure
Thank you very much! Hopefully I will get to see a print of it, soon! (I've been sent something in the post, apparently). The people I made it for said it made a good poster, so I'm glad they're pleased.
You think? :/ Thank you... but honestly, I'm really dissatisfied with it for a number of reasons. I think the cliffs and the sea turned out pretty good (yay for texture overlay layers painted in and reference)... but the city itself it pretty poor. Perspective's off, and I had real trouble getting all the colours to look right together. Initial colour choices didn't last a week's worth of painting; I should have limited my palette more.
Eh, water under the bridge. Apparently I'm being sent a flyer - and they've made poster-sized (AO!) ones of this, too. And they seem to like it very much. So I guess it's all good, in that sense.
How are you, m'dear? LOVING Freakangels, btw! (There's just not enough up!). And I was amused to see people on the Freakangels forum being like, "I want to have Duffield's babies!!!!!" XDXDXD I think you've arrived, mate. Famous!
Actually I think it's specifically the town that rocks! (although the cliffs and sea also rock). You're right in that you've been unsuccessful in perfectly rendering a 3 point perspective.... however, that's not a failing in this case, because it produces a wonderful 2.5D effect which is really quite elegant and looks deliberate. Also, because the same look is present in a lot of medieval illuminations (like this one [link]), it seems like you've set about capturing and updating a specific aesthetic, which imo makes it a lot more characterful than it might have been if the perspective was photographically perfect (especially for an RPG illustration, which are normally very technically competent but not much more). The colours also give it a faded parchment quality which supports the illuminated look.
Thanks about Freakangels btw ^_^ It's very odd reading the responses! (that quote about the babies was actually posted by a man XD XD XD)
Well, thank you! I see what you're saying... perhaps I shall claim it was deliberate! XD Really wish I could do more realistic buildings and cities, though, since the nature of fantasy means it can't be captured by photography... so it's almost a substitute to be able to paint it decently. Your comments are very lovely, though, and make me feel rather better about the whole thing! XD
And as for the you and man having babies thing - HAHAHAHAHA! XD XD XD Fanbois! Hurrah! Your artwork is the shit, though, seriously. I've even had people I know be like, "Warren Ellis? Srsly? WOW."
(I've resisted telling them anything we talked about at my going away party, though. Does not seem appropriate. That is all sorted out now, I hope?)
