I couldn't help expanding on this one... just quickly. Wanted to make the overall composition better... and play with some overlay layers in Photoshop to figure out my colours better. So I scrapped the old version! And this is the new one!
Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology was a giant ash which held Ásgard, Álfheim and Vanaheim in its branches, Hel, Niflheim, and Muspelheim in its roots, and pierced the centre of Miðgarðr as the world's axis. The World Tree has more than one guise, features in many Norse legends, and is the tree on which Odin hung for nine nights without food or water, his side pierced by his own spear (Gungnir), in order to learn the runes and gain wisdom.
I hung on that windy tree for nine nights wounded by my own spear. I hung to that tree, and no one knows where it is rooted. None gave me food. None gave me drink. Into the abyss I stared until I spied the runes. I seized them up, and, howling, fell. - the Hávamál
It's even suggested that the Norse may have hung ritual sacrifices of men, women, children and even animals... always in ash trees. A sacrifice to the gods.
I love mythology.
Corel Painter speedpaint for the fun of it.
------------------------------
I'm gonna hafta do more of these. Yggdrasil is a very rich topic all by itself, what with all the worlds attached to it, and all the animals and legends surrounding it. Plus Loki is probably my second-favourite god ever, so... more norse stuff from me, shortly. Probably. I expect.
Uhh, probably Set (from ancient Egyptian mythology), because I really like how the cultural clashes of the era affected the way the mythology was written, and became: essentially Set's the god of wilderness, foreigners, darkness and chaos purely because the people who believed in him lost a war...
Haha, those old Egyptians were funny. "Okay, you lost the war, we'll make your god the god of all cool things".
...I know that's not how it works I do find it interesting how ancient people pretty universally believed order=good, chaos=bad, but with us it's reversed. By "us" I mean 21st century young, creative types. Sure reflects the changes in living conditions, I believe.
Blarghwh I'm not sure this makes any sense to anyone but me. I haven't had my coffee yet. Just ignore me if I'm being silly.
Would your piece "World Tree" (which is quite wonderful, by the way!) be available for non-exclusive use as a novel cover?
I'm writing a novel entitled STARKAD'S SAGA: THE STORY OF ODIN'S ULTIMATE WARRIOR.
Please do note, however, that I cannot afford to pay you for the cover. I will be self-publishing these novels a Kindle ebooks only (possibly as CreateSpace paperbacks). I understand completely if you are not able to allow such free use of your work, and hope you are not offended that I would need to ask for such. For the ebook cover I would need 72 dpi, although in a decent size. For the paperback I would require 300 dpi, and the size would be 6 x 9 inches (unless I did a 'wrap-around' style cover, which is always my preference).
Thank you and most sincere best wishes,

I love mythology, aswell! This is such a beautiful piece, very deep! I love learning myths and tales, they are so interesting! The stories are so unreal and yet so real at the same time, and you can't help but just be inspired by such tales! I hope you do more mythology inspired pieces!
Anyways, love the drawing :3
