Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology was a giant ash which held Ásgard, Álfheim and Vanaheim in its branches, Hel, Niflheim, and Muspelheim in its roots, and pierced the centre of Miðgarðr as the world's axis. The World Tree has more than one guise, features in many Norse legends, and is the tree on which Odin hung for nine nights without food or water, his side pierced by his own spear (Gungnir), in order to learn the runes and gain wisdom.
I hung on that windy tree for nine nights wounded by my own spear.
I hung to that tree, and no one knows where it is rooted.
None gave me food. None gave me drink. Into the abyss I stared
until I spied the runes. I seized them up, and, howling, fell.
- the Hávamál
It's even suggested that the Norse may have hung ritual sacrifices of men, women, children and even animals... always in ash trees. A sacrifice to the gods.
Nice art! I would like to ask for permission if it's okay to have your art be part of my list on my site? I am looking forward to feature some great gods and goddesses on my site. You can check out my site here, at the bottom. Of course I'll put a credit that this is your own art. Hope you'll agree! \(^_^)/
I love the strokes for your speedpaint job here. The tree looks beautiful (needless to say the hanging man is a bit of an eye catcher there ) I think my favorite has to be that the man doesn't look like he is dead, which according to the verse you have in the artist comments hints to that. Great job~
Or even better, can I just buy it off you outright? It'd make an incredible gift for my husband, who happens to be an Odinist.
Or can I just buy it off you outright? This is spectacular, and would be a superb gift for my husband (who happens to be an Odinist).
